A part of it is circulating in the blood. Ferritin is an indirect marker of the amount of iron stored in the organism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sample<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venous blood<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>12 hours fasting prior to sampling. Water is allowed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venipuncture<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Haemochromatosis<\/li>\n<li>Liver diseases<\/li>\n<li>Inflammatory conditions<\/li>\n<li>Alcoholism<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (Iron supplements, ascorbic acid, contraceptives)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anemia<\/li>\n<li>Gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage<\/li>\n<li>Inflammatory bowel disease<\/li>\n<li>Colon cancer<\/li>\n<li>Pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Malnutrition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u0399n case of anemia, the value of ferritin decreases before the onset of symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Differential diagnosis of various types of anemia is achieved through measurement of ferritin, of serum iron as well as the total iron binding capacity (TIBC) level.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ferritin is the main iron storage complex in the human body.
