It plays an important role in the break-down, transport and processing of food lipids.<\/p>\n<p>Lipase is usually measured along with amylase for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. To a lesser extent, it is used for the diagnosis and follow up of other diseases such as cystic fibrosis, Crohn\u2019s disease and celiac sprue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sample<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venous blood<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12 hour fasting prior to testing.<\/li>\n<li>Avoidance of alcohol consumption.<\/li>\n<li>Cessation of certain drugs (codeine, oral contraceptives)<\/li>\n<li>Water is allowed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venipuncture<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute pancreatitis<\/li>\n<li>Pancreatic cancer<\/li>\n<li>Renal disease<\/li>\n<li>Peptic ulcers<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (heparin, pain killers, opioids)<\/li>\n<li>Alcoholism<\/li>\n<li>Acute cholecystitis<\/li>\n<li>Peritonitis<\/li>\n<li>Diabetic ketoacidosis<\/li>\n<li>Severe hemolysis<\/li>\n<li>Transplant rejection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Congenital lipase deficiency<\/li>\n<li>Chronic pancreatitis<\/li>\n<li>Cystic fibrosis<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (quinine)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During pregnancy lipase levels may be slightly elevated.<\/p>\n<p>Lipase has a higher sensitivity and specificity than amylase.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lipase is an enzyme secreted in the pancreas.
