{"id":32897,"date":"2023-04-02T11:55:05","date_gmt":"2023-04-02T08:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/labcare.gr\/?p=32897"},"modified":"2023-04-18T23:44:52","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T20:44:52","slug":"red-blood-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/labcare.gr\/en\/red-blood-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Blood Cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Red blood cells or erythrocytes carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the organs in the human body.<\/p>\n<p>In the CBC, the following erythrocyte measurements are included.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RBC: The number of red blood cells in your sample.<\/li>\n<li>Hemoglobin: A protein found in the red blood cells which carries oxygen.<\/li>\n<li>Hematocrit: The percentage of red blood cells in the total blood volume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CBC also includes the following indices which provide information on the physical characteristics of red blood cells:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume): The mean RBC volume.<\/li>\n<li>MCH (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin): The average hemoglobin amount in each erythrocyte.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MCHC: (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration): A measurement of the concentration of hemoglobin in red blood cells.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RDW: (Red Cell Distribution Width): The variation of the red blood cells\u2019 size.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Increased values of red blood cells<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dehydration<\/li>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>High altitude<\/li>\n<li>Hereditary cardiovascular disease<\/li>\n<li>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/li>\n<li>Pulmonary fibrosis<\/li>\n<li>Polycythemia vera<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (gentamycin, methyldopa, anabolic steroids, diuretics)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values of red blood cells<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute or chronic hemorrhage<\/li>\n<li>Hemolytic anemia<\/li>\n<li>Aplastic anemia<\/li>\n<li>Iron deficiency anemia<\/li>\n<li>Deficiency of vitamins B6 and B12<\/li>\n<li>Folate deficiency<\/li>\n<li>Lead poisoning<\/li>\n<li>Myelodysplastic syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Multiple myeloma<\/li>\n<li>Non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma<\/li>\n<li>Hypothyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Inflammatory bowel disease<\/li>\n<li>Rheumatoid arthritis<\/li>\n<li>Thalassemias<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Increased values of MCV (Macrocytosis)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Megaloblastic anemia<\/li>\n<li>Alcoholism<\/li>\n<li>Liver disease<\/li>\n<li>Hypothyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/li>\n<li>Myelodysplastic syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Gestation<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (antiretroic drugs, methotrexate, chemotherapy drugs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Decreased values of MCV (Microcytosis)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Iron deficiency anemia<\/li>\n<li>Hemoglobinopathies<\/li>\n<li>Sideroblastic anemia<\/li>\n<li>Anemia of chronic disease<\/li>\n<li>Lead poisoning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Increased values of MCH (Hyperchromia)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anemia due to B12 or folate deficiency<\/li>\n<li>Alcohol abuse<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (heparin, hydroxyurea, methotrexate)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values of MCH (Hypochromia)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Iron deficiency anemia<\/li>\n<li>Thalassemias<\/li>\n<li>Blood loss<\/li>\n<li>Celiac sprue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Increased values of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>MCHC<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hereditary spherocytosis<\/li>\n<li>Sickle cell anemia<\/li>\n<li>Autoimmune hemolytic anemia<\/li>\n<li>Serious burns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>MCHC<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Iron deficiency anemia<\/li>\n<li>Celiac sprue<\/li>\n<li>Chronic, small degree blood loss (menorrhagia, peptic ulcers)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Increased values of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>RDW<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Iron deficiency anemia<\/li>\n<li>Macrocytic anemia<\/li>\n<li>Microcytic anemia<\/li>\n<li>Hemolytic anemia<\/li>\n<li>Autoimmune diseases<\/li>\n<li>Myelodysplastic syndrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>*Decreased RDW values are of no clinical significance.<\/p>\n<p>*Red blood cell indices may be falsely elevated in hyperlipidemic patients.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of various types of anemia<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Normochromic\/Normocytic anemia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Decreased RBCs number but normal indices<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Hypochromic\/microcytic anemia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Decreased \u00a0MCV &amp;
