Insulin mediates glucose transport in cells, where it is used as energy and also helps store excess glucose in the liver in the form of glucagon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sample<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venous blood<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venipuncture<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation for simple glucose test<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>12hour fasting prior to testing. Water is allowed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation for glucose tolerance test<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A diet with at least 150gr of carbohydrates\/day is advised for three days before testing.<\/li>\n<li>8 hours fasting prior to testing is obligatory.<\/li>\n<li>On testing day, after the first blood withdrawal, the examinee has to drink a glucose solution of 75 grams and rest. Usually, two more venipunctures follow after 30 or 60 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venipuncture<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diabetes mellitus<\/li>\n<li>Acromegaly<\/li>\n<li>Renal disease<\/li>\n<li>Hyperthyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Cushing\u2019s syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (corticosteroids, tricyclic antidepressants, estrogens, lithium)<\/li>\n<li>Pancreatitis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Insulin hyperdosage<\/li>\n<li>Addison\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li>Advanced liver disease<\/li>\n<li>Hypothyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Insulinoma<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (paracetamol, anabolic steroids)<\/li>\n<li>Malnutrition<\/li>\n<li>Pancreatic islet cells tumors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high glucose levels in blood.
