It is mainly stored in bone and a small amount is circulating in blood either free or bound to proteins such as albumin.<\/p>\n<p>Calcium is required for the proper function of heart, nerves and muscles. Its role is vital in bone formation as well as in blood clotting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sample<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venous blood<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12 hours fasting prior to testing.<\/li>\n<li>No intake of food supplements containing Calcium.<\/li>\n<li>Cessation of lithium, vitamin D, antiacid and diuretic drugs.<\/li>\n<li>Water is permitted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venipuncture (Tourniquet use or prolonged fist clenching should be avoided)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary hyperparathyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Renal failure<\/li>\n<li>Hyperthyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Lung cancer. Kidney cancer<\/li>\n<li>Metastatic bone cancer<\/li>\n<li>Acromegaly<\/li>\n<li>Addison\u2019s disease, Paget\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li>Respiratory acidosis<\/li>\n<li>Sarcoidosis<\/li>\n<li>Prolonged immobilization<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (lithium, thiazide diuretics)<\/li>\n<li>Excessive intake of calcium or vitamin D<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hypoparathyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Pancreatitis<\/li>\n<li>Chronic renal disease<\/li>\n<li>Alcoholism<\/li>\n<li>Osteomalacia<\/li>\n<li>Vitamin D insufficiency<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Hyperphosphatemia<\/li>\n<li>Rachitis<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (antacids, aspirin, corticosteroids, insulin, methicillin, laxatives)<\/li>\n<li>Calcium malabsorption<\/li>\n<li>Low levels of albumin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serum calcium levels are controlled by two hormones: calcitonin and parathormone.<\/p>\n<p>Calcitonin (CT) enhances calcium excretion from the kidneys, lowering therefore its concentration in blood.<\/p>\n<p>Parathormone (PTH), releases calcium from blood and bones when necessary, increasing hence its absorption from the kidneys and the intestine.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calcium is one of the most important minerals in the human body.
