It is also found in smaller quantity in other tissues. It hydrolyzes complex carbohydrates in the small intestine, assisting thus in digestion.<\/p>\n<p>P &#8211; amylase and S &#8211; amylase are amylase\u2019s isoenzymes. P \u2013 amylase is produced in the pancreas and comprises 40% of total amylase in blood, whereas S-amylase accounts for 60% of total amylase in blood and is produced mainly by the salivary glands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sample<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venous blood<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12 hour fasting prior to testing. Water is allowed.<\/li>\n<li>Alcohol should be avoided<\/li>\n<li>Cessation or dosage adjustment of certain drugs (aspirin, oral contraceptives, methyldopa, opioids, thiazide diuretics).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venipuncture<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute pancreatitis<\/li>\n<li>Hyperthyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Gastrointestinal perforation<\/li>\n<li>Pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Hyperlipidemia<\/li>\n<li>Mumps (parotitis)<\/li>\n<li>Cholelithiasis<\/li>\n<li>Alcoholism<\/li>\n<li>Diabetic ketoacidosis<\/li>\n<li>Biliary ducts obstruction<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (paracetamol, salicylates, estrogens, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic pancreatitis<\/li>\n<li>Thyrotoxicosis<\/li>\n<li>Hepatic cirrhosis<\/li>\n<li>Cystic fibrosis<\/li>\n<li>Severe burns<\/li>\n<li>Pre-eclampsia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amylase levels are particularly high in acute pancreatitis (usually up to 5 \u2013 10 times the normal level). However, the degree of its elevation does not necessarily correlate with the severity of pancreatitis.<\/p>\n<p>In acute pancreatitis another enzyme called lipase is also elevated.
