Water is permitted.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol consumption is forbidden 24 hours prior to testing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venipuncture<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coronary artery disease<\/li>\n<li>Acute myocardial infarction<\/li>\n<li>Diet high in saturated fat<\/li>\n<li>Obesity<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes mellitus<\/li>\n<li>Hypothyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Renal failure<\/li>\n<li>Hepatic disease<\/li>\n<li>Pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (aspirin, corticosteroids, contraceptives)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decreased values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Malnutrition<\/li>\n<li>Hyperthyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/li>\n<li>Drugs (thyroxin, aspirin, cortisone, estrogens)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional information<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on their density, lipoproteins are classified as chylomicrons, very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL).<\/li>\n<li>LDL can be decreased by adopting a healthy way of life or by medical treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LDL cholesterol is a low density lipoprotein which transfers cholesterol from the liver to other organs.
