About the test
Lipase is an enzyme secreted in the pancreas. It plays an important role in the break-down, transport and processing of food lipids.
Lipase is usually measured along with amylase for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. To a lesser extent, it is used for the diagnosis and follow up of other diseases such as cystic fibrosis, Crohn’s disease and celiac sprue.

- Avoidance of alcohol consumption.
- Cessation of certain drugs (codeine, oral contraceptives)

Additional information
During pregnancy lipase levels may be slightly elevated.
Lipase has a higher sensitivity and specificity than amylase.
